Quarter 2, Week 2 (10/23-10/27)

Summary

Last week of October, second week of a crazy short eight-week quarter. It'll be the holidays before you can blink an eye.

Preparations for the Winter Concert continue in class this week. I also encourage all students to spend a few minutes each day singing through their concert pieces at home. All practice materials can be found at the link below or by using the link at the top of the Specials Home Page. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Miss Hibler (Art: K-2, 3A&B)

Kindergarten

Kindergarten will learn about organic shapes and study the artist Matisse. Book we read: Henri’s Scissors. Kindergarten students will continue practicing cutting skills by cutting out organic shapes and tracing them. 

First

First grade read Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse. We are studying the element of art texture and will complete an image by printmaking the texture and pattern of wallpaper image.

Second

Students will complete their self-portraits using proportions. Portraits will be finalized by adding hair and studying the movement and color in hair.

Third

Students will study Goldfish by Matisse and begin a replica by practicing the shapes and lines found in the image.

Mrs. Keller (Drama: 6)

Q2 Week 2 - Rehearsals this week in the black box. The performances will take place December 13 (6D) and December 14 (6C), both at 5:30 pm. Mark this date on your calendar!

Dr. Lee (Latin: 3-6)

3rd and 4th

In addition to reviewing the present tense of sum, we are also learning how to conjugate regular verbs in the present tense.

5th

We're taking a test this week over chapters 1 and 2 of Cambridge Latin Course. The test will include a vocabulary section (over chapter 1 and chapter 2 vocab lists), a grammar section (concerned with the Nominative and Accusative cases), and a translation section (choosing the best English translation of a Latin sentence). All of it will be multiple choice. For extra credit, the students will be able to decline a first declension noun.

Students will receive a vocab review crossword puzzle (our study guide) which is due on Wednesday/Thursday. It is not optional. You can download a replacement copy here.

6th

We begin chapter 3 of Lingua Latina this week, learning about the Accusative case.

Sra. Puopolo (Spanish: K-2)

Kinder, First, and Second

Students will identify the name of the holiday el Día de los Muertos and understand that it is a time to remember deceased loved ones, and identify typical decorations, such as tissue paper flowers and sugar skulls.

Miss Schosek (Music: K-2 & 6)

Winter Concert: December 1st 5:30PM at Trinity Baptist Church (319 E. Mulberry) 

Students arrive at 5:10PM dressed in concert attire. 

Concert attire: 

-Boys: white oxford style shirt, black slacks, a black belt, black dress shoes and socks, and a tasteful tie or bow tie preferably in school colors (no pop culture or musical ties).   

-Girls: white blouse (no halter tops or spaghetti straps), a black skirt (knee-length or longer), black dress shoes (no high heels), and appropriate under-garments.  Girls may also wear a solid black dress if this is preferable. 

Sneakers or athletic shoes are not permitted.

Listed below is a summary of what your K-2, 6th grade scholars will learn in Quarter 2, Week 2:

Kindergarten:

  • Practice steady beat improvisation.  
  • Learn to create a visual for high and low voices.
  • Improvise loud and soft (piano and forte).
  • Learn facts and musical compositions about Joseph Hadyn.
  • Concert Songs #1, #2, and #3.

1st Grade:

  • Practice reading quarter and eighth note patterns in known songs. 
  • Learn to label and notate so-mi in traditional and staff notation.     
  • Learn facts and musical compositions of Felix Mendelssohn.  
  • Concert Songs #1, #2, and #3.

2nd Grade:

  • Practice writing rhythmic patterns that contains half notes.  
  • Analyze repertoire that contains a pitch, re, between mi and do.
  • Learn facts and musical compositions of Fanny Mendelssohn.  
  • Concert Songs #1, #2, and #3.

6th Grade:

  • Continue to write major scales using the pattern WWHWWWH. 
  • Sight reading complete and incomplete major scales on the staff with solfege and hand signs. 
  • Concert Songs #1, #2, #3, and #4.

Coach Walsh (P.E.: K-2, 3C&D)

K-3 scholars will be preparing for field day. Students will practice all field day games and learn how to work together as a team. Field day takes place on November 1 (1st and 2nd grades) and November 2 (Kindergarten and 3rd grade).

Mrs. Welch (Art: 3C&D, 4-6)

3rd grade

The students will begin drawing a replicate of John Audubon’s male cardinal.

4th grade

The students will learn how to draw and color a fall tree.

5th grade

The students will begin to draw a replicate of Albrecht Durer’s rhino using a grid.

6th grade

The students will begin studying and drawing a 17th century lithograph of an owl.

Scholars are practicing for Field Day. Field Day takes place on November 2 (3rd and 4th grades) and November 3 (5th and 6th grades).
