Quarter 1, Week 3 (8/26-8/30)

Having solidified most of our procedures and routines, we are now beginning to see new content in each of our subjects ...

Art

Hibler: Art K-3

  • Kinder Art will review basic shapes, read The Shape of Things, and begin their first replicas from the book.
  • 1st grade will be introduced to Mosaic tiles and design their own using basic shapes.
  • 2nd grade will learn about symmetry and find symmetrical things in the world around them.
  • 3rd grade will delve into the work of Vincent van Gogh and begin practicing linework.

Welch: Art 3-6

  • All students will be receiving lessons on the importance of drawing and sketching. Each class will take time to practice drawing a particular animal.

Drama

Lucero: Drama 6

  • Scholars will continue to practice acting basics and general theater vocabulary and begin learning to read and decode Shakespearean English.

Languages

Puopolo: Spanish K-2

KINDER

  • The students will practice saying goodbye through gestures. They will waive their hand and say adios.

FIRST GRADE

  • The students will learn different ways to introduce themselves by using the textbook to visualize and visually identify the context in which they are said.

SECOND GRADE

  • The students will learn different ways to introduce themselves by using the textbook to visualize and visually identify the context in which they are said.

Lee: Latin 3-6

  • All students
    • Receive their Latin names (5th grade adds the House name as a "nomen"; 6th grades chooses a personal "cognomen")
    • Receive Q1 Latin Practice logs (due 9/25 for B and D sections, 9/26 for A and C sections)
    • Receive vocabulary lists and/or make first set of flashcards
    • Learn the Latin Alphabet song

Additionally ...

  • 3rd and 4th grades
    • Learn "ut vales" (how are your doing?) and typical replies
    • Learn to comprehend and respond to basic physical commands (stand, sit, walk, stop, jump, run, etc.)
  • 5th and 6th grades
    • Begin reading Lingua Latina chapter 1 (lines 1-21)

Music

Abrego: Music K-2

  • Kindergarten
    • The students will learn to develop tuneful singing, beat skills, listening skills, and learn song repertoire. 
  • 1st grade
    • The students will learn the visual and aural presentation of rhythm such as quarter notes and eighth notes.
  • 2nd grade
    • The students will learn the visual awareness and aural presentation of 2/4 meter

Balmer: Music 3-6

  • Third Grade
    • will review meter, measures, barlines, and simple time signatures
    • will perform the Pentatonic scale with hand signs
    • will begin 1st Fall Concert piece
  • Fourth Grade
    • will review Treble Clef from Middle C to G above the staff
    • will perform Pentatonic and Major scales with hand signs
    • will review structure of the note tree from whole note to 16th note
    • will begin 1st Fall Concert piece
  • Fifth Grade
    • will review, identify, and name notes on the ledger lines of the treble and bass clefs
    • will name and define the function of the Grand Staff
    • will perform Major and Minor scales with hand signs
    • will begin 1st Fall Concert piece
  • Sixth Grade
    • will define ledger lines and identify notes of the Grand Staff
    • will perform I-IV-V-I pattern with hand signs
    • will identify and label notes on the keyboard
    • will begin 1st Fall Concert piece

Physical Education

Walsh: PE K-3

  • Kindergarten and First Grade
    • demonstrate space awareness, effort, and locomotor movements through movements with their hula hoops.
  • Second-Third Grade
    • will demonstrate locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative skills in personal and general space
    • will participate in team building activities to strategize and communicate with classmates.

Woods: PE 3-6

  • Students will learn the basic skills and concepts necessary to play volleyball.
  • The ability to move with fast feet during a volleyball match.
  • Students will be able to move from side to side effectively and quickly to be successful.
  • Resting position.
  • Hands on knees, lean forward on toes, shoulders in front of toes.
  • Ready position.
  • Hands off thighs.
  • 45-degree angle shoulder width apart.
