Quarter 1, Week 5 (9/11-9/15)

Summary

It's Freedom Week, with a special 9/11 commemoration on Monday and activities centered on the American Constitution throughout the week. Specials classes, however, will largely continue as normal.

Mrs. Balmer (Music: 3-5)

Week 5 in music will bring continued study of our Composers of the Month and preparations for the Winter Concert. All students will begin learning their 2nd concert piece this week. Hand chime introduction will be delayed to Week 7, but rest assured that 5th graders will be performing a hand chime selection on our Winter Concert. Students are also working on note name identification and adding new rhythmic patterns to our vocabulary.

Warm Up Exercises

Miss Hibler (Art: K-2, 3A&B)

Kindergarten

Create Shape of Things replica from the story about shapes.

First

Finish Mosaics and begin a collage all about lines.

Second

Continue discussing symmetry. Begin drawing practices of symmetrical creatures and learn new techniques to measure and place lines across a page.

Third

Continue practicing contour lines. Draw cherry blossoms and add ink lines.

Week 5 - Reading A Midsummer Night's Dream

Dr. Lee (Latin: 3-6)

3rd and 4th

We begin chapter 2 of Minimus this week and learn about Latin adjectives. We will receive a new vocabulary list on Wednesday/Thursday (a new Quizlet set will come available then). We're also learning the Noun Case Bingo song this week (and reviewing Quis Quid Cur).

5th

We start chapter 2 of Cambridge Latin Course and begin learning about the Accusative Case. We'll review/learn the Nominative Song.

6th

We start chapter 2 of Lingua Latina per se illustrata and begin learning about the Genitive Case. We'll review/learn the Nominative Song and - a brand new one - the Genitive Song.

Kinder, First, and Second

The students will understand the story of “El Grito”, understand that el Dieciseis is Mexican Independence day, understand that Mexicans display the Mexican flag as an act of patriotism, and comprehend and use the phrase, “Viva Mexico!”

Listed below is a summary of what your K-2, 6th grade scholars will learn for week five: 

Kindergarten: 

-Learn to create a visual representation of a loud or soft voice.  
-Practice tuneful singing and improvisation.
-Learn facts and musical compositions about Johann Sebastian Bach. 
-Begin learning Concert Song #1 and #2.

1st Grade: 

-Learn to analyze repertoire that contains one and two sounds on a beat. 
-Practice writing high and low melodic lines. 
-Learn facts and musical compositions of Francois Couperin. 
-Begin learning Concert Song #1 and #2.

2nd Grade: 

-Learn the visual representation of a musical phrase that contains do.
-Improvise 2/4 meter.
-Learn facts and musical compositions of Domenico Scarlatti.
-Begin learning Concert Song #1 and #2.

6th Grade

-Apply knowledge of the staff and keyboard to identifying whole and half steps.  
-Develop reading and performing dotted half notes through rhythmic practice.
-Practice singing two-part melodies.
-Begin learning Concert Songs #1 and #2.

Scholars will begin to work on the correct technique for overhand and underhand throwing.

2nd & 3rd

Scholars will be strategizing and working on teamwork skills as they complete new relay tasks.

3rd grade

The students will begin to study Vincent van Gogh’s painting, Starry Night.

4th grade

The students will learn how transfer drawings onto another surface.

5th grade

The students will continue their optical illusion art projects.

6th grade

The students will study how the artist, Gustave Klimt, used textured patterns in his paintings.

This week 3rd-6th graders will continue learning about volleyball.
