Quarter 1, Week 6 (9/18-9/22)

Summary

Three more weeks in this short quarter one! Let's all stay healthy!

Mrs. Balmer (Music: 3-5)

This week in music (Week 6) 5th grade will start preparing their handchime pieces for the Winter Concert on December 1st at Trinity Baptist Church. All classes will continue working on their 2nd concert song as well. All grade levels are learning new rhythmic notation this week: 3rd grade - dotted half notes, 4th grade - syncopation and individual 8th notes, 5th grade - dotted quarter notes. The time flies by in music class! I love all the wonderful discussion around our listening and the astute questions provided by our Scholars. They keep me on my toes!

Kindergarten

Practice drawing organic shapes by completing a fishbowl drawing. Observe Matisse’s fishbowl.

First

Begin practicing line direction by drawing a study of a house and a garden.

Second

Complete their beetle drawings, practicing symmetry and begin practicing shading techniques and reviewing values.

Third

Begin studying Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night and class collaboration project of the finished piece.

Reminder: Current Latin Practice Logs are due on September 27 (A & C sections) or September 28 (B & D sections). Check out the Latin Resources page for replacement copies, vocabulary lists, and links to Quizlet sets.

3rd and 4th

We are learning about noun-adjective agreement. We are receiving vocabulary lists for chapter 2 and making flashcards. If the scholars will finish the flashcards at home on the night they receive the list (Monday for B and D sections, Tuesday for A and C sections) and then study the cards for 5 minutes, they can mark two squares on the practice log (as opposed to the usual one per day).

5th

We are learning about the accusative case. We are receiving vocabulary lists for chapter 2 and making flashcards. If the scholars will finish the flashcards at home on the night they receive the list (Monday for B and D sections, Tuesday for A and C sections) and then study the cards for 5 minutes, they can mark two squares on the practice log (as opposed to the usual one per day).

6th

We are learning about the nominative and genitive cases. We are receiving vocabulary lists for chapter 2 and making flashcards. Listed below is a summary of what your K-2, 6th grade scholars will learn for week six: 

Kindergarten: 

-Prepare to internalize beat through kinesthetic motions.   
-Practice singing in a loud or soft voice.
-Learn facts and musical compositions about George Fredric Handel.
- Concert Songs #1 and #2.

1st Grade: 

-Learn to label one and two sounds on a beat with rhythm syllables.   
-Learn facts and musical compositions of Franz Schubert. 
-Concert Songs #1 and #2.

2nd Grade: 

-Notate do using rhythmic and staff notation. 
-Prepare to internalize a sound that lasts for two beats through kinesthetic activities. 
-Practice singing and reading melodies with la, so, mi, and do. 
-Learn facts and musical compositions of Muzio Clementi. 
- Concert Songs #1 and #2

6th Grade

-Practice writing and identifying whole and half steps.   
-Develop reading and performing dotted quarter and eighth notes.
-Practice singing two-part melodies and the major scale on solfege.
-Concert Songs #1, #2, and #3.

Scholars will continue to work on the correct technique of overhand and underhand throwing with an exciting Volcano game.

2nd & 3rd

Scholars will be strategizing and working on teamwork skills as they work on overhand and underhand throwing.

The students will draw and paint their assigned Starry Night tile for classroom collaborative art project.

4th grade

The students will learn watercolor pencil techniques.
